Description
I got the idea for this painting from an old paperback western and a Marty Robbins song on his western ballads album. The title "Running Gun" pays tribute to the many western men who earned a living selling their fighting ability after the civil war. For the background I used an approximation of a river in the San Joaquin Valley where my husband pans for gold. I decided to use Appaloosa's for the horses because I hadn't painted them before. The Appaloosa is a beautiful, spirited horse developed by the Nez Perce people of what today is the United States Pacific Northwest. Appaloosas were once referred to by settlers as the "Palouse horse", possibly after the Palouse River, which ran through the heart of Nez Perce country. Gradually, the name evolved into "Appaloosa". The Appaloosa is best known for its colorful leopard-spotted coat pattern. There is a wide range of body types within the breed, stemming from the influence of multiple breeds of horses mixed into it throughout its history. Each horse's color pattern is genetically the result of various spotting patterns overlaid on top of one of several recognized base horse coat colors.
