Description
This is the companion painting to "The Long Hunters" and was my 2nd entry in the art show in 2007. Unfortunately for me, although the paintings were admired they didn't win anything that year. I had fun painting them anyway!
From around 1700 to 1830, early explorers were sometimes called Long Hunters because they were gone so long from civilization. The lived off the land, and earned a marginal living by trapping and hunting. Later, after the Lewis and Clark expeditions successful return, the Hudson Bay Fur trading Company among others was created. They developed Rendezvous in the summer for selling and trading of furs and supplies needed by the mountain men. The most famous of these is the Green Mountain Rendezvous which still takes place; re-enactors put on quite a show for the tourists and have a great time themselves.
